Importance of Training
In the present times one of the major elements that a company deviate from its level in the industry by its skilled workforce. It is one of the key factors the organization acquire its competitive advantage in the market competition. As cited by Cribb, G. (2006) ,
“The most valuable asset of a 20th-century company was its production equipment The most valuable asset of a 21st-century institution will be its knowledge workers and their productivity. ( Drucker, P. 1999)
So, most of the organizations in the current context, intend to acquire a competitive advantage through staff training and staff development. Staff training and staff development are parts of the bigger concept of HRD.
According to the Agrawal, V. (2011) ;
“ Training refers to the method used to give new or present employees the skills they need to perform their job and development are a long term educational process utilizing a systematic and organized procedure.”
Training and development have come to be viewed as a lifelong activity, rather than the acquisition of qualifications. As a result, the focus of concern has shifted from what the trainer does, to what the learner requires. The ultimate aim of the training and development process has been the creation of the learning organization.
Training is a function that is very important in the business environment and the exponential growth in technology due to the following reasons. (McNamara, 2012)
· Increased job satisfaction and morale among employees
· Increased employee motivation.
· Increased efficiencies in processes, resulting in financial gain.
· Increased capacity to adopt new technologies and methods
· Increased innovation in strategies and products.
· Reduced employee turnover.
· Enhanced company image'
· Risk management'
Selling is an art and also it differentiates from person to person, from product to service' Product selling is comparatively easier when the company sells a feature of a service or service marketing. Life insurance is a kind of financial service and negligence of importance in developing countries, like Sri Lanka. So, insurance sales personnel, especially life insurance need much morale and motivation to conduct their profession in a good and continuous manner. In the field of life insurance marketing, the key importance of training can be depicted below according to the above key areas.
· Increased morale and motivation level.
· Increased job satisfaction.
· Increased technical knowledge and skills needed to market life insurance.

Training can be done under several categories such as,
- Management training
- On the job training
- In house training
- Blended training
- Sales training
As I believe on the job training ia best way to train people because of training should be practical.

The success of the training is based on employee understandability. If a well-trained employee works with efficiency as well as the manager can bring out productivity by him easily.
